For those on a low-calorie diet, certain types of foods and beverages can help fill you up and satisfy your taste buds, all while contributing little to no extra calories. Some of the best low-calorie diet items include fruits and vegetables, which are rich in fiber and other nutrients. Snack foods and desserts can also be enjoyed on low-calorie diets, so long as sugar substitutes are used. Coffee and tea are among the best beverages for those on a diet, due to their very low calorie contents.

Low-Cal Fruit

Fruit is a quick and easy diet food because there's no preparation or cooking involved. The fiber content in fruit helps fill you up, while the natural sugars can help satisfy your sweet tooth. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, some of the lowest-calorie fruits include peaches at 60 calories per medium fruit; strawberries at 50 calories per eight medium berries; grapes at 90 calories per 3/4 cup; apples at 130 calories per large fruit; kiwi fruits at 90 calories per two medium fruits; one-quarter medium cantaloupe at 50 calories; nectarines at 60 calories per medium fruit; and plums at 70 calories per two medium fruits.

Low-Cal Veggies

Like fruit, vegetables are also high in fiber and very low in calories. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, some of the lowest-calorie vegetables include asparagus at 20 calories per five spears; celery at 15 calories per two medium stalks; a medium-sized cucumber at 10 calories per one-third; mushrooms at 20 calories per five medium; radishes at 10 calories per every seven; medium summer squash at 20 calories per half; green onion at 10 calories per 1/4 cup, chopped; and cauliflower at 25 calories per one-sixth of a medium head.

Sugar Substitutes

Being on a diet does not mean you have to eliminate sweets and dessert foods. By simply subbing out real sugars in favor of foods made with artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols, you can enjoy your sweets without the extra calories. Artificial sweeteners are calorie-free sugar substitutes that are many times sweeter than sugar. Varieties include aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, stevia, acesulfame K and neotame. Sugar alcohols are another form of sugar substitute that contain approximately half the calories of real sugar. Varieties include erythritol, glycerol, isomalt, lactitol, mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol and maltitol. Both types of sugar substitutes can be found in many foods that typically contain real sugar and are often marketed as "sugar-free" or "no sugar added."

Low-Cal Beverages

Water is a perfect beverage for dieters because it keeps you hydrated and healthy while contributing no calories. Of course, you might sometimes feel the need for some variety. Coffee and tea are two ideal beverages for anyone on a diet -- both containing just 2 calories per cup.
